I am created in His image (Genesis 1:28)
Irrespective of marring by the Fall this remains true for every person:
‘What are human beings, that You are mindful of them?’ (Psalm 8:4–9).
God has a special interest in mankind, even above that of angels. Jesus became a man. God greatly values people and will dwell with them eternally.
I am unconditionally loved by God for who I am
This is stated clearly:
‘God so loved the world that He gave …’ (John 3:16) and ‘God demonstrates (or commends) His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ (Romans 5:8)
I am precious and priceless
This is because we are redeemed by the precious blood of Christ. (1 Peter 1:18).
‘The redemption of the soul is costly.’ (Psalm 49:7–8) What is the value of the blood? Who can measure it in all its mighty cleansing energy and power? It is the very life of God himself. This gives me special value.
I am a saint
We are justified and sanctified through faith in Christ at conversion. This means we are righteous and holy before God (Romans 5:1, Hebrews 10:10, 1 Corinthians 1:2, 6:11).
I am a prince or princess in God’s kingdom
The Bible tells us that we are members of the royal family (1 Peter 2:9): ‘The Lord raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap and the dung hill, that he may seat them with princes, even the princes of his people.’ (Psalm 113:7, 8 AMP)
I am a child of God and a member of his household
We are sons and daughters of the King:
‘As many as received Him (Jesus), to them gave He the right to become children of God.’ (John 1:12) ‘We belong to God’s family, and are members of his household.’ (Ephesians 2:19)
I am adopted as an eternal son of God
All are God’s sons through faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26). ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ … having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself.’ (Ephesians 1:3,5) Whilst in some verses the idea of children and sons is interchangeable, in other places sonship is presented as a greater and an eternal concept.
Sons and daughters are temporal, but sonship is eternal. Every Christian at conversion is immediately brought into sonship, by adoption through association with the Son. God will dwell with us eternally on the basis of sonship, ‘He who overcomes shall inherit all things, I will be his God and he shall be My son’ (Revelation 21:7). God has given to us nothing greater than sonship. It is his answer to our shame. It gives us dignity, glory, a new image and liberty in the Father’s house.
